Snake Oil to Sacred Oil: Your Doctor’s Convenient Change of Heart
by Debbie Spurlock
On the first day of pharmacy school Dr Gillespi stood in front of class and said he would be teaching Herbology and Medicinal Chemistry 1 in the program that I was proudly accepted into. He said this would be the last year of Herbology because quite frankly herbs and supplements do not work and we have pharmaceuticals that work better. So, Herbology would not be required in the program after this year and now it is only an elective.
Alrighty, great, I thought, one less class I have to take! I’m glad I didn’t take the class. My friend said she took the class as an elective and it was a waste of time because the whole class was based on how herbs were inferior to chemical drugs, and they simply had no value in health care.
Let’s fast forward 30 years. Let’s see how science is evolving.
Supplements VS Pharmaceuticals
Are you noticing the competition that is occurring between the pharmaceutical industry and natural health industry? What the Frac** is going on? Why are licensed health care providers writing you a prescription to pick up at the pharmacy and selling you $239 worth of natural supplements before you leave their office? Supplements that they are now carrying in their office for your immediate purchase. Supplements that are going to help your healing and augment your pharmaceuticals.
Remember when your doctor criticized you when you said, “I read on Google that a supplement would help my issue?” Remember when your doctor and nurse mocked you and said, “Oh, you’ve been on Doctor Google again?” Remember when you asked your doctor if you should take vitamin B or C, and he said that was a waste of money because it just makes expensive urine?
Well, no more, your hard-core chemical priest has now seen the light and supplements are now not only good for you but are endorsed by your primary care provider, and available for your immediate purchase with a medical blessing. Oh, yea, plus some cold hard cash for your expensive urine!
What’s the difference between supplements and pharmaceuticals?
Supplement denotes a product that you buy at the health food store. Something “natural”, something that is not a prescription from your doctor. Something your doctor calls expensive urine. Supplement is to augment or help you with something that is bothering your health.
Examples could be the supplement Melatonin to help you sleep, or Turmeric for your joint inflammation or back pain. Or St. John’s Wort for mood. Another example of a supplement is vitamin C for your immune system to help fight off cold and flu symptoms.
You don’t need some licensed expert to tell you to buy Vitamin C. You choose to do so because of your own understanding and common sense. A supplement is something that is not manufactured in a laboratory or tested on rats. Most supplements grow outdoors and are harvested out of the earth or cooked in grandma’s kitchen or the cottage industry kitchen.
The FDA requires that all supplements in your favorite health food store to be labeled with the following:
These Statements Have Not Been Evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
In the United States we find this disclaimer on many of our favorite vitamins, minerals and dietary supplements.
Pharmaceutical denotes something with high potency and requires special handling. It must be safely guarded and controlled by an expert licensed pharmacist (until it goes off patent) and only used if your doctor prescribes it.
It could be poisonous if used without a prescription and the prescribing expertise of your health care provider. It is a product manufactured in a lab. It is a chemical and will have side effects and there is nothing natural or cheap about it, but it has been tested on rats to exhibit an effect that may somehow be good for you.
There are classes of pharmaceuticals with names such as controlled and legend drugs. There are thousands of pharmaceuticals on the market today. Pharmaceuticals are chemicals and can be legal or illegal. The prescription from your expert health care provider determines the difference between legality.
Pharmaceuticals can be advertised on cable news channels direct to the consumer. They tell you that the pharmaceutical may cause diarrhea, vomiting, seizures, headaches, delayed gastric emptying (constipation) and on and on… But, you must talk to your doctor about getting this expensive, side effect causing, poisonous chemical.
Follow the Money
So, what’s really going on you may be asking? At least I hope you are asking. Well, let me tell you.
Pharmaceutical companies and food companies are buying up the supplement industry. That’s right. The pharmaceutical companies realized that they can’t beat the natural world of food and medicine and there is money to be made. Lots of money!
So, they are buying up supplement companies and using your once anti-supplement-provider to push the product. Wouldn’t you think the FDA would have a problem with this? Of course you would! You would expect them to protect the pharmaceutical companies from being contaminated by the natural medicine industry.
Remember the FDA is there to protect the consumer from the chemical companies. They are there to regulate the pharmaceutical industry. Could it be that the pharmaceutical industry really knows that their chemicals do not treat, cure or prevent any disease? It makes me laugh, then it makes me really mad.
Don’t you just hate a hypocrite!!
Keeping your eyes sharp
Common eye issues to watch out for as you age are cataracts. The natural lens in your eye becomes cloudy. Proteins in your lens break down and cause things to look blurry, hazy or less colorful. A sticky film of oily proteins collects on the lens causing cortical cataract. This causes the lens to become opaque and brittle over time.
What is a cortical cataract?
A cortical cataract is an opacity in the outer layer, or cortex, of the natural lens. It is more common in people with diabetes and hypertension. Common symptoms of cataracts include cloudy or blurry vision, faded colors, trouble seeing at night, sensitivity to light, seeing halos around lights, double vision, and the need for frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription.
